Awakening to Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is the consciousness coming online to habitual and programmed beliefs, habits and actions. It is mindfully waking up out of a foggy-going with the motions- life many of us live in.

Most of us can’t create/sustain change to a better and happier life because we lack the self-awareness to see what we are doing and why. When we aren’t aware of our habitual nature in thoughts and actions, we carry on with a life that isn’t fully serving us.

Self-awareness is truly a gift in cultivating a happy life.

If you are someone whose ready for a change, wants to grow themselves and create a happy life-

Lets start with good ole self-awareness.

First Step.

Who do you want to be?

I’d like you to answer this by either writing/typing it out as open minded as possible. Don’t let intrusive thoughts or assumed ideas of what you can/can’t do interfer. It doesn’t matter if you perceive its attainable or not, write it out!

What you want to be is perfect exactly the way you write it! There is no need to micromanage your words. So what values, what behaviors, what expression do you carry with you ideally? Get thorough with the details.

If its hard for you to envision a different you, write about the feelings you would feel as that person instead. What does it feel like to be that person?

Now…the hard part…

Who do you believe you are now?

I would also like you to get really honest about how you feel about yourself. If how you feel is self-deprecating, shameful, mean, cruel, write it all out! Get it all out of your head and write/type it all out.

Reread what you’ve written and take a moment to realize that everything you’ve written doesn’t actually represent you, it’s how you feel towards yourself. It was programmed and reinforced many many times over. Some of it by yourself growing up and some by others.

Now.

How do you think other people percieve you as?

This needs to be as objective as possible. Based on what other people see you do in actions and behaviors, if you were a stranger how would you see yourself? Do you see yourself as selfish, shy, introverted, selfless, abrasive etc?

Now, reread that answer that you have just written and pause. Does what you have written hurt your feelings? Do you prefer people see you as this? Do you prefer to care how they see you verse how you see you? Do you feel misunderstood?

These are beautiful questions to answer internally.

Now- Take Accountability-

Part of you is holding on to these beliefs because they feel safe and comfortable because you’ve been with them for a very long time.

It’s your fault to carry on thinking the beliefs that no longer serve you and that’s okay because your waking up to changing them.

No matter how mistakes you’ve made, you are not your old skin, so get ready to shed it.

Now that your aware of these deep core beliefs, both of which are internal interpretations, let them go.

We are cracking the mold we’ve been in and letting the inner light shine threw.

Next, lets pick one to three habits/behaviors we can commit to changing for 30 Days. You can do more than one, but ideally less than five.

Keeping a habit tracker, an app, or a notebook to objectively note your habits is a beautiful way to clearly see your behavior. It doesn’t matter if its good or bad at the moment, but that you are taking a mindful note about it and coming back to your ideal intentions.

Do not incorporate shame to motivate or punish yourself. We are leaving shame out of our life moving forward!

The key to self-awareness is noticing, noting, and being intentional. After 30 Days, look at the things you could keep up with and the things you couldn’t. If it didn’t fit in your schedule can you change the way you approach it or should you try something else for the next 30 Days. If it doesn’t fit the new you, brainstorm how to change that.

We are not perfect human beings so Progress over Perfection! So if we get caught up in life drama, stress and unpredictability and we revert back to habits we don’t like, we will pause, accept that pattern and continue moving forward.

Remember, these are the first real steps towards change and opening our eyes every time we close them is the key to metamorphosis.

If you’ve read through this post entirely, I’m so proud of you for wanting to make a change. The light inside of me honors the light inside of you.
